Whether birth defects will happen in another child depends on what the defects are and what caused them. All pregnancies have a risk of about 5 percent (one in twenty) that the baby will have a birth defect. Having one child with a birth defect increases your chances of having another. The first step is to have a firm diagnosis of the problem in your affected child.
