In the majority of cases, jaundice is not a life-threatening or serious condition. The bilirubin levels can get high enough that treatment is needed. In most cases the treatment is relatively simple with special lights.
If the bilirubin level gets to a serious level, then an exchange of the baby’s blood (exchange transfusion) may be necessary. Fortunately, this is a rare occurrence.
